Conspiring to commit a crime or Attempting to commit a crime carries the same
punishment as actually commiting it. Intent must be proved using a reliable
method, such as truth-probing. Entrapment is not a defense.
The laws of this city are:
Licenses: Prostitutes, priests, and beggars must have a license to practice
their trade. They can get a prostitution license by contributing 10 beers to
the Sheriff's Benevolant Association, or a begging license by contributing 5
beers. Punishment for turning tricks or for begging without a license is the
money taken in, plus the price of a license. A license is granted at that
point. Unlicensed priests are turned over to the Priesthood for resolution of
the case. Only other priests can issue priesthood licenses. Begging is taking
something from somebody without giving something in return.
Murder: Any intentional causing of death. Self-defense is not an
excuse. Punishment is death.
Theft: Taking the property of another without their consent.
Punishment is the return of the property plus one half of its value in beer or
equivalent items.
Illegal Worship: It is illegal to worship any god or other being
outside the recognized Egyptian pantheon: Osiris, Set, Isis, and Horus. Worship
of Japanese gods is punishable by confiscation of all property and intensive
questioning under a truth-probe. Worship of demons is punishable by death by
torture.
Illegal Truth-probing: Illegal use of a truth-probe is punishable
by truth-probing for the cause of the illegal truth-probe. Legal truth-probes
are those authorized by the Sheriff. The Sheriff may retroactively authorize
a truth-probe by a deputy. Civilians may {\bf never} perform truth-probes.
Disturbing the Peace: Anything which disrupts the peace of San
Francisco: being obnoxious in the Oasis; Beating up The Golden Gate's ladies;
Trying to replicate the Cataclysm; That sort of thing. Punishment is decided by
the sheriff or any present deputy.
