pthreads with AIX 4.1 and gcc 2.7.2

I'm having problems running simple threads programs 
under AIX 4.1 and gcc 2.7.2. I either get a core dump
or failed pthread_create calls. 

I link in libc under the /lib/threads dir. 

any help is welcome
