pthread compilation problems

I'm attempting to install pthreads on an i486-Linux (kernel 1.2.13) box and
in fd.c, fstat is declared and fstat() is also declared in an included
header (sys/stat.h). Then
I'm not sure what to do or which one to use...Is there an optimized version
of pthreads for linux?
