Dear subscribers of the pthreads@mit.edu mailing list,

I have noticed that over the past two days I have received nearly a
half-dozen messages with the body 'unsubscribe' because such messages have
been sent to the newsgroup. I would like to offer a friendly reminder to
all that under almost no circumstances is sending an 'unsubscribe' request
to a mailing list the right thing to do. In most cases, it causes your
request to be sent to many (possibly hundreds) of people and many such
message annoys them greatly. Instead, you should keep track of how you
were subscribed to the mailing list in question. Three major mailing
list systems and how to get help on them are:
listserv: Send mail to listserv@<hostname> with the body HELP.
A message will be sent to you that should explain how to unsubscribe
      from a list.

majordomo: Send mail to majordomo@<hostname> with the body HELP.
A message will be sent to you that should explain how to unsubscribe
      from a list.

MIT moira list: Send mail to owner-<maillist>@mit.edu with
a message asking to be removed from the list. (Note: These are
      generally _not_ automated.)

For instance, in this case, the proper way to remove yourself from this
mailing list is to drop a note to owner-pthreads@mit.edu. This way
the request will only go to the person who can do something about it,
and not the hundreds who can't.

   Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
   Jered Floyd
