It turns out that it is a simple program *only* on a.out systems. It
is different for ELF, COFF, XCOFF, ECOFF, and has platform
dependencies for those formats.

On the other hand, if you're willing to use the GPL'ed "bfd" library
to do the work, it becomes trivial (because bfd abstracts all of
that.) It might even be an option to "objcopy" -- objcopy now supports
deletion of symbols, but I don't know if it handles rename.
