well, i thought it could be IRQ conflict at first too, but we just tried
to install linux... here are some results from attempted installs of 3
OS's:

1) win95 -- gets thru most of install fine... but when booting for the
fist time, it gives multiple Global Protection Faults, and never runs
for more than a few minutes with every application faulting... it also
never really finishes setup

2) netbsd -- gets to the point after detecting the NE2000 ethernet
card... then it hangs... even with a special kernel configured for the
apparent hardware settings of the card

3) linux -- boots up, but upon running fdisk to make partitions... it
displays pages and pages or errors, and seg faulted once... i ran it
again, and it finally created the partitions, even though there were
still memory errors (page faults, etc)... when trying to initialize the
linuz swap partition, setup just dies (with same type of page fault
errors)

so, i think he should return his PC and get a new one... unless anyone
can offer an explanation for a software related cause, and i don't think
an IRQ conflict would result in this...

thanx
