netbsd master.passwd & passwd

I had just gotten Xwindows to run. Then to restart it I typed:
kill -1 1
because I thought someone had said to do that...
Well, after that the master.passwd file was corrupt and would
not let me log in as either root or ajkim.
When i tried "ajkim", it said it couldn't add me to the passwd file.
So, how do i add: root, ajkim, toor... as users and to the master.passwd
file.
BTW, I have just installed netbsd and X today.
