telnet doubles characters?

Using the telnet in /usr/athena/bin (NetBSD) to talk to a SunOS 4.1.4
box, I noticed that in some cases I get doubled characters.

I noticed this while scanning through logfiles and wondering why some
lines looked longer than others, and observed the problem went away
when I hit ^L in less.

I was able to reproduce this fairly straightforwardly with repeated
invokations of "lptest"; it seems to very depending on how much data
is output. For instance "lptest 60" doesn't generate problems, but
"lptest 60 100" seems to have one instance each time.

An example:

> lptest 60 100
[...]
rstuvwxyz{|}~ !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMN
stuvwxyz{|}~ !"#$%&'()*+,-./01234566789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNO
tuvwxyz{|}~ !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP

(note the doubled 6 in the middle line.). Here's another
fragment:

YZ[\]^_`abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz{|}~ !"#$%&'()*+,-./012345
Z[\]^_`abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz{|}~ !"#$%&'()*+,,-./0123456
[\]^_`abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz{|}~ !"#$%&'()*+,-./01234567

Note that the doubled character changes in position. The same problem
shows up if I telnet to granola from itself. It does not show up if I
telnet to the chargen port, suggesting it might be an
optioning-related bug?

Using the /usr/athena/bin/telnet client on bill (to granola), I don't
see this problem.

I'm really too tired to debug this now, and am trying to finish
reading TWO CROWNS FOR AMERICA, so I'm sending this to netbsd-help
instead of netbsd-dev and hoping someone else will debug it.
