Okay, first of all, make sure you actually have an /etc/XF86Config, and
not some symlink to a nonexistant file or somesuch (try to read it).

After that, if it's still there, try and run it yourself by hand:
	log in as root
	
	startx

this should give you a list of everything that is going wrong.
