Have you tried reloading /usr/X11/bin/xf86config to rebuild your
XF86Config file (back up your old one first) and specifically selecting
to change your video mode order?
There's a toward the end of the program that asks you if you want to
change video settings for each color mode. You'd select 1 for the first
color mode listed, and then you'd type, say, 432 for your resolution defaults
to be 1024x768, then 800x600, then 640x480 for that particular color mode.

Once you rebuild your XF86Config, emacs it and scroll almost to the
bottom. There you'll see the video server settings. Change virtual from
1152 900 to 1024 768 or whatever you want.
