You're correct, that's a much better conceptual solution.
The named that NetBSD ships with will support it the way I mentioned,
but you should do what you said, which is outlined in
draft-rfced-info-barr-00.txt
except the recommendation is to use "localhost." (a recommendation
I generally agree with) instead of "localhost.mit.edu.".
