slowly starting up

I'll bring in small problems one at a time:
can't get my mouse to work on my new installation...
tty00 (i presume it's 2 zeros and not 2 o's) does nothing (cursor just sits
there on the middle of the screen)
pms0 make the cursor fly up to the top left hand corner of the screen and
wiggle when I move the mouse, but not far enough to click on anything.
It's the standard microsoft port compatible mouse 2.0a--came packed in with
my gateway.
