The Trident 9440 is a relatively new chipset. XFree86 3.1.2 doesn't
support it yet. There's a beta version of XFree86 which has been
released in binary-only form with an expiration date sometime in
January or so which has preliminary support. I'm not sure
exactly which cards are kindof supported and which aren't, but work
is in progress to make most of them supported sometime in
the next six months or so.
