You should have a line that says

	Modes "640x480" ... "1024x768"

or some such.  Reverse (or otherwise change) the order so that the
high-res mode is first, and you should get the full virtual resolution
at startup.

You can use ctrl-alt-+ to change modes by hand while running X.
