Actually, I know what the problem is likely to be. Ray is probably
using a 3C509 with UTP, and a driver bug causes the autodetection to
get a single ping when it tries the AUI setting.
To get around this, when the installation script asks what flags to
use, enter "link0 link1 -link2".
