AFS probs with new kernel

I compiled a kernel for myself with the new sources, and got the new
libafs1_0A.o and the most recent modload, but when I reboot, and AFS
tries to start, I get this error:
modload: unable to load device; inappropriate ioctl for device
...
Then I get
bad system call; core dumped
about 5 times.
Any ideas?
