I'm running FreeBSD (not _that_ different from NetBSD wrt drivers,
although FreeBSD + PAO seems to have much better PCCard support) on a
Dell Inspiron 7000A with excellent results. I may be able to answer
some of your specific questions. In general, the answer is yes, you can
install NetBSD on a laptop.
