We have an early prerelease of our Athena port to NetBSD 1.3 for
interested testers. Please only install the prerelease if:
* You are willing to reinstall your machine at any time,
almost certainly at least once before the release goes
public. There will very likely not be a supported update
procedure for people who install this prerelease.
* You are willing to put up with things breaking. We may
rebuild the system packs at any time, which means programs
running out of the system packs could stop and dump core.
Also recognize that there are a number of loose ends we already know
about, so don't expect everything to be perfect. Please do not
recommend this prerelease to other people; we are not ready to
maintain any level of support for it. We will make an announcement to
netbsd-announce when we have something ready for general users.
That said, the floppy image for installing the prerelease is in
/mit/netbsd/prerelease/athena-8.0/i386/floppies. The installation
looks pretty similar to the installation for the NetBSD 1.2-based
release, with slightly fewer questions.
The new Athena port is based on the current Athena sources. There may
be things you aren't used to. To keep mail traffic low, it would be
good to ask questions about the prerelease on the zephyr class
"netbsd" before sending mail. If you do send mail, send it to
sipb-athena-bugs if it's about a bug in the Athena software, and to
netbsd-help if it's a problem with the install.
In case you're curious about the version number 8.0: we decided to
track the Athena major version number (8) but not the minor version
number, because we don't keep our releases in sync with Athena
releases. We expect NetBSD-Athena 8.0 to be similar to Athena 8.2,
but not identical.
