I believe that support for atapi cdroms was only recently added to the
netbsd kernel. Does the latest netbsd-athena support them? If so,
how do I enable mine? It was known as /dev/hd3a (and, of course,
/dev/cdrom) under linux (secondary slave drive). If not, will it be
added sometime in the near future or should I try my luck at compiling
   a custom kernel? Thanks.

ATAPI support was merged into NetBSD-current a few weeks ago,
and from my experience works pretty well. NetBSD-Athena doesn't
support it, since the latest NetBSD-Athena release is based on
NetBSD-1.2.

If you're feeling adventerous, you can try to upgrade to 1.2G,
either with the sources or (better idea) with the binary snapshot
avaliable at ftp.netbsd.org:/pub/NetBSD/arch/i386/snap-970901. This is
not a task to be undertaken lightly; a lot of stuff has changed since
1.2. You *might* be able to get away with just installing a 1.2G
kernel and AFS module. Make sure you have a backup of your system as
it is now, read all the files about what to do, and consider following
the current-users@netbsd.org mailing list* to keep abreast of what's
changing. I believe the GENERIC kernel in 1.2G has the ATAPI support
in it. The kernel configuration file for GENERIC will have the
following lines which enable ATAPI CD support:

wdc0 at isa? port 0x1f0 irq 14 # ST506, ESDI, and IDE controllers
wdc1 at isa? port 0x170 irq 15
wd* at wdc? drive ?
atapibus* at wdc?
cd* at atapibus? drive ?

(this is also the support for IDE hard disks).

That said, we hope to have a new version of NetBSD-Athena
released shortly after NetBSD-1.3 is released, and that will have
support for ATAPI devices, including CD-ROMs. I don't know what the
time frame for 1.3 is, but I wouldn't expect a new version of
NetBSD-Athena based on it until IAP at the earliest.
