I have recently set up netbsd on lorentz.lms.mit.edu, and since I had
a PCI ethernet card I needed to get a custom image (the one called ed6000)
which has worked, butthere were a couple errors during the installation.
first of all there just before and after it asked for my IP address I
got the following..
fdcresult: timeout
fd0a: soft error reading fsbn247
and others like it but with a differen fsbn number. The next error was at the
very end of the "Retrieving and unpacking NetBSD" step, when I got...
gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data-crc error
then during the next part of the install there were tons of messages like
/usr/libexec/ld.so: chown: libc so.12.5: no file or directory
with different files each time.
I did the install off of two different install disks, the first one
showed these error messages and would boot up until the installing
deamons step, at which point it gave me a series of getty error messages.
I made a new install disk and re-installed, getting the same installation
error messages, but this time the system seems to come up alright. There
is a regular error message that looks like..
lorentz atrun[772]: Cannot change to /var/at/jobs/: No such file or directory
Also, is there any way to change the initially inputted
NetBSD configuration variables short of re-installing the system? For
instance, I would like to have the NetBSD reports also sent to my athena
account. I also might be changing my IP address at some point.
The other thing I wanted to ask was about being root. Never having been
root before I don't know how to do a lot of the root-type things, like
making a local directory which can be used by my athena account, and stuff
like that - is there a good guide to being superuser someplace around or
on the net?
thanks muchly
