When it fails, can you try ^C'ing to a shell prompt and pinging your
subnet router (18.234.0.1) and a random IP address off of your subnet
(18.177.0.155, say) and see if they ping?

This sounds like an unrelated problem, and I may or may not be able to
help. Can you give me the exact error message, and your hardware
configuration?
