While waiting for a new daemon you could set up some "light 'n' darkness":
modify your /etc/hosts.allow with an entry like that:

portmap: host1,host2,host3... and so on (or make the modifications needed as
explained in "hosts_access") so that only the machines you mention can
talk with the portmapper, all the rest receive an error.
