Well, the genie's out of the bottle now (urg--I hate these sayings) on
this set of lists suggested by Olaf, and started by Olaf and myself for
security discussions and announcements.

Judging by the number of subscriptions generated after Olaf and I
mentioned their existence in just the linux-doc list, the community has
a fairly strong interest in having lists devoted to security for Linux.
Once Olaf's c.o.l.a. post goes through I expect that things will really
get rolling here.

Just to make sure everyone knows the setup here, I'll describe things
briefly:

Two lists, "linux-alert" and "linux-security," are in place. The alert
list is intended to be a CERT-like list for announcing security problems
that have been discovered that affect Linux--it's pretty much one-way,
with posts to it compiled or drawn from submissions to the security list
and/or directly to the moderators. The security list is more free-form
and discussion-based, though it will be moderated (at least initially).
No rigid moderation criteria are really established; everyone already
can pretty much figure out what is on-topic and what's not, so I don't
anticipate much, if any, post-rejection occuring.

In addition to the two regular lists, each list is available in digest
form. (There's not much use in subscribing to the alert list in digest
form obviously, but it's there if anyone wants it, as well as for
archive purposes).

The digest lists are set to mail out digests at the following thresholds
(any of the three will trigger a digest mailing):

500 lines of information.
40,000 bytes (500 lines * 80 bytes) of information.
Any amount of information present with no digest sent in past 7 days.

All the lists, regular and digest, are archived, as well as indexed
nightly for easy perusal via the Majordomo archive-retrieval mechanism.

--Up.

P.S. This message is partly a test, just to make sure all is working as
it should. Other lists on this server have been running flawlessly, but
I always like to be certain...
