I looked through the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) for Compaq 7PL287 at
http://hardware.redhat.com/redhatready/cgi-bin/us/db-hcl.cgi
<http://hardware.redhat.com/redhatready/cgi-bin/us/db-hcl.cgi> did not find
any support. I went and browsed through the old HCL did not find your Model
there. Compaq has a page for supported Linux products at
http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/linux/systems.htm
<http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/linux/systems.htm> I recommend that you
take a look at it and see if your system is listed there, if not then you
need to dissect your machine ( watch out for any warranty issues that you
might violate by doing so) and start matching each item with HCL, start with
the motherboard, CPU, Hard Drive, Video and Sound Cards..etc. It might not
be worth while to do this? Call Compaq they have some sort of linux phone
support at http://www.compaq.com/services/software/ss_linux.html
<http://www.compaq.com/services/software/ss_linux.html>
Finally I advise that you start looking into news groups and posting your
questions there since linux-alert@redhat.com <mailto:linux-alert@redhat.com>
is an alert mailing list not a support one. Good Luck.

Subject: Can't install Linux on my new Compaq Presario-HELP!

In as much as I can't find a support page or email contact for us poor shmos
that want desperately to install Linux, but who are unable to, I've taken
the liberty of writing here.
I have a Compaq 7PL287, running Windows ME, and have tried installing Linux
RedHat and Mandrake for the last 1 1/2 months, with equal success-none to be
exact.
When attempting to install RedHat, the installation proceeds to: running
/sbin/loader, and then freezes there and nothing else happens!
I've tried everything I can think of: I installed Windows 98, thinking that
it might be a ME problem. No dice. I've tried various .img files, all with
the same result.
I hope that someone has some kind of idea for this thing. I suspect that you
know who has made it such that a Linux install is impossible with this
computer. If this is so, then the future of the Linux OS is at stake. If
not, I would appreciate some sort of help here. My best friend is very Linux
literate, and is at his wits end on this thing. He, by the way, has a
smaller and slightly earlier version of my computer, and has had a dual boot
thing going for over a year.
I mean, I'd be very happy to stick it to Gates and co., especially after
they seem to have misplaced DOS ("We feel that consumers no longer need DOS"
-a Compaq representative). My only fear is that he's stuck it to me first.
PLEASE HELP!
