Along with the questions of why use shadow, and why isn't shadow a standard
linux package, I had a problem recently on both my systems where shadow
stopped working mysteriously. When I used passwd to change the password,
it appended a line to the end of the shadow file, if I used usermod, it
clobbered the dates for expiry, etc. Worse of course, when I tried to
log in, no go, it was trying to read the passwd file instead of shadow.
Finally I gave it up and put the old version of passwd back on the
system, and the old login, etc. Then about 2 weeks later the same thing
happened on my second system, and I had to boot off the setup floppies to
get in and take the x out of the passwd file to get logged in. And then
I removed shadow there as well. I am about to try it again, but I have
doubts....
