And one more thing to add to the "suggestions list" based on this experience
1) (the no-pci option)
2) A message saying "likely your PCI is broken, check with your vendor!" if
the driver manages to spot that it is in an impossible state. The present
message did not indicate clearly to me what I should do next, or what the
matter was.
I'm afraid that such a message would not really be appropriate there. There
are many possible underlying causes that could result in that message
appearing, and listing all of them would not be reasonable. So far, yours is
the only such case that has been reported. If additional ones appear, I'll
reconsider whether a more specific message is appropriate.
Maybe you could try dropping out of the PCI probe entirely at this point if
the driver is still alive.
The point at which that error occurs is much too late. The probes are long
over, and normal operation is assumed at this point.
(thanks for the clue about what the adaptor bios setup message is
referring to with "low and high bits". This is another wonderful piece
of impenetrable jargon! Might you pass on a request for a better way of
putting it through your connections in buslogic?)
There is quite a detailed explanation of low and high byte termination, and in
which cases each byte should be terminated, in the manual that came with your
BT-956C. Please read that section again and see if you still feel there is a
need for further documentation. Even the back of the BT-956C board itself has
a summary of the possible narrow and wide connection options and which byte
should be terminated.
