I found the problem - a couple of the jumper pins on the internal drive had
somehow gotten mangled, preventing proper termination (amazingly enough,
there appears to have been no other damage). Straightening them out & adding
an external terminator fixed it. I'm still not sure that it should have
locked the machine up that solidly but fixing the termination solved the
problem.
