Hello,
I have problems mounting my mo (640 MB) with kernel 2.2.16. Using
kernels 2.2.15/2.2.14 it worked (apart the problems I reported some
time ago). This bug seems to be introduced with 2.2.16
If I try to mount the mo with 2.2.16 I get:
mount: block device /dev/sda1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
or too many mounted file systems
and this messages in /var/log/messages (I chopped date, hostname and
'kernel:'):

I'm a bit irritated by the message stating: 'RESETTINGING SECTOR
SCALE from 4 to 1 sda1' )the 640MB MO's are hardsectored to 2048
bytes).
