Ok. scsiinfo -i reported that the drive did not support SYNC data
transfer negotiation, as well as some =07: firmware created somewhen
1995 (the drive has a manufacturing date of 45th week 1995). I verified
that with the Tekram setup tool and that as well told me the drive did
not support sync. Strange.
So I pulled out Netscape and went to http://www.tandbergdata.com/ and
downloaded the =07:28 firmware update (dated 1996-07-31), booted into
Win95, flashed the update and rebooted into Linux.
It now looks like (scsiinfo -i)

The Linux kernel now likes the drive better and properly negotiates sync
transfers:
sym53c875-0-<6,*>: FAST-5 SCSI 4.0 MB/s (250 ns, offset 8)
So the firmware update cured the problem. No need to pull out any gory
details of drivers or things.
Note: the flashit1-20.zip tool that Tandberg Data provide works with
DOS, Win9x and WinNT. An aspi32.exe (don't know if that helps) is in
their tdviewer.zip tool.
