Note that there are TWO drivers for that chip: the actual AM53C974
driver (which is also named AM53C974) by D. Frieauff, and a "tmscsim" by
Kurt Garloff.

I have been using Kurt Garloff's (tmscsim) driver for my DC-390 on SuSE
Linux without problems; however, admittedly, I boot from IDE and my
CD-ROM and tape drives now are attached to a DC-390U which is driven by
Gérard Roudier's sym53c8xx driver.

So check if you have to choice to use one or the other driver for your
Tekram DC-390, if you don't have the choice, then you'll have to wait
for Debian to fix their boot disks.
