Dear Linux users,

do you have any idea about the following problem:

My Pentium II PC with IDE harddisk runs DEBIAN Linux 2.1, Kernel 2.0.36.
I bought a CDROM writer YAMAHA 6416 with SCSI interface, and ONLY for
this I recovered my old Adaptec 1542 CF controller (settings: standard
addresses, BIOS off, Floppy off, termination auto). Now I try to connect
the CDROM writer through the 1542.

Booting linux gives me the following infinite loop running on the boot
screen:

scsi0 : Adaptec 1542
scsi : 1 host
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi 0,
channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
Sent BUS DEVICE RESET to target 0
(line above comes 8 times)
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi 0,
channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting

...and so on ad infinitum.

You see, at least the controller is found. My impression is that this
is something fundamental, and obviously has nothing to do with the CDROM
writer. Could the 1542 be broken? Any other idea?

I greatly welcome your help.

Best Regards

Hartmut
