5cm is too little. S-" draft recommends 30cm distance.
However, under heavy load the SCSI timeouts may be triggered by SCSI bus
congestion. have you enabled the Disconnection feature of your SCSI host
adapter? (You should!) Do all of your disks support disconnection?
Maybe increasing the timeout helps you, but normally it should _not_ be
necessary.
