What board is it? If you don't know exactly, have a look at /proc/pci
(or use lspci), which will help you in case of a PCI SCSI adapter.

You have to load a driver for it by either having a module to support it or
by having support compiled into the kernel. Check you bootup messages.

Maybe you need to recompile your kernel and enable compilation into the
kernel or as module ...
