[snip problem description]

I have a 1542cf too, and I've had a Wangtek 6200-HS, and have now a
DDS-2 DAT (can't remember what brand; probably a Segate).

You might try to upgrade the BIOS on the aha1542cf. BIOS and firmware are
downloadable from Adaptec's website.
http://www.adaptec.com/support/overview/aha1540.html
You'll need two new EPROM's, of course.
A direct link to the latest (v2.10) BIOS/firmware is
ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/pub/BBS/eprom/cf154x.exe

Uhmmmm .... I had a similar problem recently, but I think it was a 2.1.13x
kernel, where the scsi tape handling was broken, not 2.0.x.
