Hello,

With the stock 1.3c sym driver you must load the sym53c8xx driver first,
or use 'excl' boot option for the sym53c8xx driver if the ncr53c8xx
driver is loaded first. This is fixed in recent drivers available
at ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/roudier/drivers/linux/
Since you report only having insmoded the sym driver, then the above
hopefully does not apply.

I noticed that the following message is displayed several times by
the driver:

> sym53c810a-0-<5,0>: phase change 2-6 6@005fce45 resid=5.

It means that the device switched from COMMAND PHASE to MESSAGE OUT
phase for a 6 byte command, leaving a residual of 5 bytes (1 byte read).
Are you sure, you read '2-6'?

If it is the case, then something seriously broken probably occurred on
the SCSI BUS, since there is no relevant reason for a device to behave so,
unless it is seeing wrong signals on the SCSI BUS, in my opinion.

I would recommend you to check your cabling and terminators.
And if you have time for, you may want to give the latest 1.5c sym53c8xx
driver a shot.
