configurable hosts.c ordering?

I know that this has probably been asked before, but is there
any boot-prompt configurable way to modify the hosts.c detection
order?
My primary adapter is an Initio 9100W and my option for a second
narrow controller at this point are either Advansys or some flavour
of NCR/Symbios - both of which are detected before my '9100W.
I don't want to edit hosts.c for every kernel release and I don't
like modules for components that don't change (and I definitely
detest maintaining an initrd image).
I hacked around this on my old board when I added the Initio
as the primary (augmenting the existing AHA1740 and DPT PM2022
boards) by inserting the extra drivers as modules after boot,
but I wasn't really happy with it since it did require hacking
the rc scripts.
Thanks,
Barrie
