Question 1:
   - are you operating a medium changer ?  A medium changer is a device
     which can automatically load, remove and choose from different
     cassettes.
     if no: well, why are you using mtx, then ?

Question 2:
   - if you answered YES to the first question, are you 100% sure that
     your tape device has LUN (Logical Unit) 0 as the tape drive, and
     1 as the changer ?  (if you don't know, look in the debug messages,
     or do a scsi-probe/probe-scsi/sprobe/whatever from PROM monitor
     after clean shutdown).

If you do not have such changer, you need other software. I have software
for Solaris, including full source, which can be used to control a
SCSI ID-based autochanger (such as the DILOG Libra series, from
the company I work for, thank you for reading this subliminal
advertising :)).

this works under Linux (through sg) and Solaris (see README.Solaris)

Presumably there is no LUN 1.
