There have been problenms reported indicating, that
(a) depmod is broken and generates a dependency of ppa from scsi_mod
in spite of its existence inside the kernel
(b) loading of scsi_mod in case of an static version present in the kernel
can result in loosing your disks

Maybe something similar happens for sd_mod.
Try to (re)move sd_mod and see what happens ...
