George,
That was accurate up to and including 2.2.5 . From
2.2.6 (16th April 1999) there is a new (backward
compatible) sg device driver. The new sg driver can
be retrofitted into earlier 2.2 series kernels.
There is a web page:

http://www.torque.net/sg

This page includes source, utility and test programs and
documentation. The 2 documentation files are:

http://www.torque.net/sg/p/sg.txt
http://www.torque.net/sg/p/sg_long.txt

Hope this helps.
