Okay... I now have egg on my face.
I recompiled linux-1.1.64 and ran into the same problem.
So... I took the CD Drive to work and plugged it into a Sun system
there and it hung that system. I replaced the *malfunctioning* drive
and now the Linux CD ROM driver (for linux 1.1.88) works perfectly
with it.
It was a hardware problem. 1/2 :-( 1/2 :-)
