You are booting on a SCSI device on a presumably ext2 filesystem.
This means that EVERYTHING you need to boot MUST be in the kernel.
So recompile ncr53c8xx, SCSI and SCSI disk to be in the kernel
(not as modules).

Before the driver was certainly in the monolithic kernel.
