  scsciinfo -s <device> will give you the serial number.  scsiinfo is at:

	ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/ALPHA/scsi/scsiinfo-1.7.tar.gz

There are even RPMs for it at the RedHat contrib site.
