Well, I've seen a couple of reports about SANE breaking between 2.1.126 and
.127, so there were changes, but I ddin't check of what kind those changes
were. Maybe the timeout/timer handling changes?

Maybe your tape is very slow and the DC390 does lock the kernel for a too
long time, when it transfers data to7from the tape. You should see DC390:
Timeout (...) messages then, however.
I cannot help you with Initio, sorry.
