No and yes. We've found that for the greatest compatibility between
systems, DAT tapes should be written in fixed blocks of 512-bytes. It
is usually possible to read tapes written in other modes, but can take
some effort (basically, more 'mt' or equivalent commands).

Hmm, don't have an answer for this one off the top of my head. You
could try an 'mt setdensity' on the drive though, and see if it accepts
the new code...

This is probably related to the density "problem" you noted above. If
you stick a DDS-1 tape in a DDS-2 drive, you get DDS-1 performance
(~175K/sec).
