Adaptec 1542CF (ISA) and IBM 6x86MX?

I have *severe* difficulties with my Adaptec 1542 after switching from
a Pentium 90 (1.5*66) to an IBM 6x86MX (PR-300, 3.5*66). First, it's
not recognized by the NT bootloader, its own BIOS refuses to install
"BIOS not intended for this host adaptor", and if I finally get it to
boot, Linux refuses the AHA1542 again and sticks busy with aborting it.
Any known incompatibilities Cyrix M-II/IBM 6x86MX with ISA cards such
as the Adaptec 1542?
It's no real loss since I have a Tekram, but I was very stunned
anyways.
