I have had nearly the exact same setup. P100 w/ AHA-2940, 2.0.30,
RH 4.0, and the Exabyte 8700LT. No problems to report. It is recongized on
boot with no problems, and tar/afio/mt all control it just fine. It is now
hanging off the NCR SCSI card in my Alpha XL-366 again with no major
problems. I have had a few problems when accidently trying to backup
nothing (error in backup scripts), but they could all be traced back to
user error.
Otherwise, this is a good and solid drive. I have been using mine
for almost a year now with no show stoppers. Its transfer rate is about
500k/sec, not a speed demon, but can get the job done. 120M tapes hold
about 5GB whether or not compression is turned on or not, which is quite
odd. Might just be the data I am backing up, but not a real problem as of
yet. Go to www.exabyte.com, they have a web page about setting up thier
drives with Linux which explains the details.
I would recommend this drive to anyone who wants a "real" tape
drive for a Linux box. :) (i.e. none of those horrible TR-4 drives that
used to drive me crazy. :( ... ).
If you have any more questions about the 8700LT, feel free to ask.
PS. Buycomp had the best price on them the last time I looked
(www.buycomp.com).
