53c810 hangs when booting

Hello!
I can't boot a new system with a NCR 53c810 SCSI host adaptor. It dies
after writing the initialization messages of the NCR and finally
"scsi: 1 host", i.e. while scanning for attached devices, without
issueing an error message, it just stops.
Before booting linux the devices are correctly detected by the
BIOS. Also MS-DOZE (yuck!) works flawlessly with both devices (disk
and CD-ROM).
I CAN boot linux both with a kernel without scsi support and with a
correct kernel and just the NCR without both devices.
The CDROM has got a termination which is activated.
I have tried the following kernels:
-1.2.8 distribution kernel
-1.2.8 with alpha patch diffs.rel11.gz applied and manually corrected
rejects (which eliminated the warning about the revision 2 chipset)
-1.3.17 distribution kernel (which eliminated the warning about the
unknown pci device)
All of them ended at the same point.
