Hi, there.
I'm having problems installing a second Adaptec SCSI adapter.
My system uses an Adaptec 2940UW for all it's drives: 2 hard drives, a
CD-ROM, and a Zip drive. All work excellently. I want to add a second
adapter for the Umax 610S scanner, because I'm told it doesn't work on the
same adapter as the hard drive (I tried it - it doesn't). I tried the card
that came with the scanner (some proprietary card that claims to be
"adaptec compatibile"), but it didn't work.
I rummaged through my pile of old cards, and came up with my venerable
1742B card. I think I set the jumpers correctly: IRQ 10 (the 2940 uses
IRQ 11), DMA channel 6, floppy access disabled. With BIOS enabled, the
computer tries to boot from "Drive 0" - which of course doesn't exist on
the 1742 card. With BIOS disabled, the computer boots, but linux doesn't
recognise the card. Also, when it boots, the sound card (soundblaster
clone) says it can't access IRQ 5.
- Can I do this? (i.e. run both 1742B and 2940UW)?
- Does the 1742 have some "hidden" requirement for IRQ 5?
- Should I be enabling the BIOS on the 1742?
- Is there a way to detect if I've compiled in support for the 1742?
- can I use a kernel command-line to get linux to recognise the 1742?
BTW, my kernel is 2.0.33, and I've never gotten into using modules. I
just re-compile with whatever drivers I need.
Any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated!
