Could you give this fresh patch a try using the following kernel config
for the ncr53c8xx driver:
- Maximum number of queued commands = 4
- Default number tagged commands    = 3

This patch is against linux-2.1.125.

If the thing, by miracle, works, then could you make further testings
using the same default value 3 and some large value for the maximum 
number of queued commands.

People who still experience problems using driver 3.0i with tags may also 
give this patch a try.
Warning, this is for now a 10 minutes tested patch.

Drivers 3.0x can use any tag number for 1 to 253. With the attached
change, the driver will use a more conservative tags numbering:  1,3,5, ..
until MAXTAGS*2+1.  Devices that donnot like large tag numbers may be
happy of this change when MAXTAGS is not too large.
