The weird thing was, I asked badblocks to log to a file ( -o /root/sdb1 ),
and got nothing in that file even though the kernel complained about
several sectors having unrecoverable read errors. Even odder, running
badblocks a second time (with -w again) generated no errors the second
time around. I had one extra disk, so I left the questionable one out as
our spare. I plan to do more testing with it. The other 3 became a news
spool today.
